The most important tip is to avoid making the wig look too perfect. If you want your wig to look natural, remember that hair is free moving, can have a mind of its own, and is not usually keen to stay put - unless styled that way. As I say, “gruff it up a bit”! Lol! When I say gruff it up a bit, I mean shake out the wig and break up the part – separating it from any permatease that may be present.Play around with the fibers of the part until it looks … “right” to you.
Finger-pick and fluff up the wig with your hands. Sometimes playing around with combing and moving around the fibers of a wig can really do wonders! As I said before, your head and hairline are unique to you, don’t expect your wig to come already prepared for it. A synthetic wig may look like human hair, but it is in fact fibers. From the wig’s assembly to packaging and shipping, those fibers can arrive to you flattened and tight to one another. The warmth of your hands and some gruffing can make your wig come alive.
Finally, feel free to style and accessorize! Treat your wig as you would your bio hair or the dream hair you have always wanted!! Experiment: clip it up, add a headband, put it in a pony…. have fun with it! My motto is: Life is short wear wigs!!
Care Tips to Avoid Damaging Your Curly Wig Do not shake or agitate curly wigs when you take them out of the box. If the curl or wave starts a little lower from the hairline, brush the top and part the hair, but only finger style the ends. Place the hairnet on the wig when washing to avoid weighing down and separating the curls. Use a leave-in conditioner and reshape the curls using your fingers. Shopping for a wig can be a confusing and frustrating endeavor, especially if it’s your first time. Faced with so many new hair and wig-related terms, some wig seekers simply don’t know where to start. The Wig Company aims to demystify the world of wigs so that you can shop with knowledge and confidence. Whether you’re a wig veteran looking to try something new or you’re deciding if wearing a wig is the right choice for you, read on and learn everything you need to know about real human hair wigs.
Human vs Synthetic vs Natural Hair When we use the term real human hair it seems pretty straightforward, right? You take hair from a human head and make a wig out of it—simple. Well, not quite. There are actually several different treatments of human hair that change how it looks and feels, how long it lasts, and its optimal care. Let’s start with the basics. Human hair wigs are completely distinct from synthetic wigs, whose fibers are produced by humans but not found in nature. Real or natural may be used to refer to human hair but know that not all real or natural hair is human; many real hair wigs are sourced from animals such as the yak, which has a hair structure remarkably similar to human hair. In short, when shopping for 100% human hair wigs or real hair toppers check that your wig is clearly described as human hair. Remy Hair In order to understand what it means for hair to qualify as Remy hair, we need to understand a little more about the structure of hair itself.
three-layers-of-human-hair.jpg A strand of human hair consists of three layers: The inner Medulla – the nearly invisible innermost layer of the hair shaft, soft and fragile, and has little to do with how hair behaves. A middle layer called the Cortex – this contains all the keratin and proteins that give your hair strength, and is also the place where chemical reactions from dyes and perms take place An outer Cuticle layer – this is made up of lots of little layers of translucent cells that overlap like scales or shingles on a roof. Remy human hair wigs and toppers pay special attention to the cuticle layer, making sure that all of the scales are facing the same direction. This is important because the cuticle layer protects the inner Cortex from the elements. When all cuticles are facing the same direction, brushing and styling pushes them tight to the Cortex. Closing the cuticle not only protects the hair, it also allows light to cleanly reflect off the strand, giving it a glossy, healthy shine. A Remy human hair wig or wiglet is a hairpiece with all the cuticles arranged facing downward. The hair is typically taken directly from the donor’s head and tied together so that it will remain in this natural state. Because of the attention to this detail, Remy wigs are long-lasting with fantastic shine and a natural look and feel.
Virgin Hair Though virgin and Remy are terms often used interchangeably, they really mean two completely different things. Virgin hair is always unprocessed and untouched by chemicals. No dyes, perms, bleaches or relaxers have been used to modify the chemical structure in any way. Virgin human hair wigs and half wigs are usually Remy, but while Remy human hair wigs can be virgin, they don’t have to be. Non-Remy Hair remy-non-remy-hair.jpg Non-Remy hair is almost always chemically treated. Because the cuticles are facing both up and down and it would take enormous effort to rearrange them, the hair is treated in an acid solution that strips the cuticle layer from the cortex. It’s then coated with a layer of silicone to add back some shine. This process has an advantage—hair with no cuticle is much easier to color—but non-Remy wigs can be prone to damage, don’t hold color as well, and won’t last as long. Kinder to your wallet in the short run, non-Remy wigs and toppers are ideal for people who like to change their style often. Selecting Your Human Hair Wig When selecting the human hair topper, wig or extension that’s right for you, here are some final considerations: Non-Remy hair wigs are easy to color and come in a variety of shades. They are less expensive than other options and perfect for people who like to try different looks. On the other hand, they don’t last very long, don’t retain as much shine as other wigs, and don’t look as natural.
Remy hair wigs are long-lasting (up to one year!), hold up well to styling, and have great shine. They’re heat-safe and style just like your real hair. They can be more difficult to color than non-Remy wigs and come in a narrower range of shades. Usually pricier, these wigs and toppers will be your mainstays. Virgin hair wigs are unprocessed with a very natural look. Virgin wigs are long-lasting and can be heat-styled. Always in naturally-occurring colors, they are less common and more expensive than chemically treated hair. Virgin Remy wigs are the gold standard for human hairpieces. From clip-on extensions to half-wigs and toppers, they are top-of-the-line quality and you can style them as if they were your real hair! The bigger price tag is worth it if you’re looking for a wig that will last and maintain its quality. Explore our wide selection of 100% human hair wigs in styles you’ll love. Wigs UKRinsing with hot water will damage the base. We do not recommend sleeping, showering or swimming during wear. Store on a hanger to avoid unwanted kinks or crimps Avoid brushing the hair when wet to prevent damage. Any cutting or chemical processes, such as perming or coloring, should be done by a professional hair stylist. We do not recommend lifting or bleaching human hair; depositing color provides the best result. Consult our Guide to Real Human Hair Wigs and Toppers for more information! Wig Cap Types and Constructions Ever wonder how wigs are made? It all starts with the base, or “wig cap”. A wig cap is the base material used to attach synthetic fibers or human hair strands to create and shape a wig. The latest wig cap constructions have a more natural/realistic look and are lighter, as well as more durable, which can increase comfort, and wear times. When choosing your wig, be sure to consider the cap construction to ensure a great fit for you. Here are the various types of wig cap constructions, along with their features and benefits. Basic or Capless Construction The basic or capless cap is the most common, sometimes called standard or traditional, wig cap design. This cap is constructed using narrow strips of material, or wefts, that are attached to the frame of the wig, usually by a machine. The top of the wig cap base has a solid lace top (closed top), where only the sides and back are designed with open rows (wefts). Because the wefts are open, you can actually put your fingers through them and touch your scalp. This open weft design helps provide a lighter, cooler, and more comfortable fit. In order to help conceal the rows of wefts, the base of the wefts are “crimped” or have shorter fibers added. These features also create lift and volume. Most wigs in this category are considered low maintenance because they are ready to wear out of the box, with minimal styling and preparation needed. Capless wigs are great quality at a budget-friendly price. Total Capless Construction
Total Capless is much like the capless construction. The difference is not only are the sides and back designed with open rows (wefts), but the top area is designed this way as well (instead of a solid lace top on the Capless Construction). As with the Capless Construction, the total capless construction features the open weft design. It is considered to be lightweight and provide ultimate ventilation. Monofilament Construction Monofilament wig caps have a nearly transparent sheer top, made of lightweight, fine mesh material, and emulates the appearance of a natural scalp. The hair is attached by hand-tying one or two strands at a time to the mesh material, which helps the strands to move more freely, just like a natural head of hair. The monofilament area is located at the part, the crown, or the entire top of a wig cap. A monofilament part (mono part) allows for multi-directional parting while creating the appearance of natural hair growth. A monofilament crown (mono crown) creates the appearance of natural hair growth where the hair is parted at the crown. The full monofilament top (mono top) allows for parting in any direction, which will give you the biggest opportunity for styling flexibility. Double Monofilament Construction A double monofilament cap is designed with an added layer of soft fabric for extra comfort, which is great for someone with a sensitive scalp, including those who have received medical treatment such as chemotherapy.
Hand-Tied Construction The hand-tied wig cap can be constructed using two methods. Method 1: The ENTIRE cap, meaning the front, sides, and back (as opposed to just a specific section) is constructed by manually hand tying individual hair fibers to the mesh base. This is called 100% hand tied. Method 2: Only a SECTION of the cap, such as the top is hand-tied, and the rest of the cap is machine wefted. This method allows your natural skin tone to show through, giving the look of natural hair growing from your scalp. The hand-tied construction imitates the natural movement of real hair. It is considered to be a softer, more comfortable cap, and is also lightweight and well ventilated, which is great for someone with a more sensitive scalp or hair loss. Lace Front Construction Lace front wig caps are made using a virtually sheer lace material along the front hairline and are designed to create a natural looking front hairline so the hair can be styled away from your face or even pulled back. The lace can extend from temple to temple, and also ear to ear, depending on the manufacturer. Each hair is individually hand-tied to the sheer lace, creating the illusion of natural looking hair. For this reason, the lace front wig is often referenced as the wig with an “invisible hairline”. This feature is sometimes combined with a monofilament top 100% hand-tied base, which can be a costlier option. Exclusively By The Wig Company
There are two types of wig caps that are made exclusively by The Wig Company. The Sleep Wig and the Soft Stretch Wig. Both wigs caps are designed specifically with comfort and durability in mind. Sleep Wig The Sleep Wig cap is designed for women that have no hair or very little hair and can be worn, during the day, while you sleep, or during hospital stays. Made with a Total Capless Construction, this night n day cap is lined with a very soft 100% nylon stretchable mesh material, resulting in a comfortable and secure fit. Attached to the sleep wig cap is a 100% nylon lace headband that has an easy-access Velcro adjustment strip along the front. Each Sleep Wig comes with removable smooth bangs. Soft Stretch Soft Stretch wigs offer clever integration of softer and wider perimeter stretch bands, and a new stitching technology. Here are its features: Soft Stretch Hairline – A soft lightweight fabric with subtle stretch ability located at the front underside of the wig cap. This treatment provides a lighter, cooler front hairline with moderate, soft stretch fabric. Soft Stretch Ear Tabs – Designed with soft expandable fabric attached to the ear tabs, resulting in a contoured custom fit. Other ear tab designs do not have the same ability to aid in comfort or in fit. Soft Stretch Nape – Gently and securely hugs and conforms to your neckline. The standard nape on all other wig caps is not designed with the stretchability to conform to the back of the neck.
Soft Stretch Circumference Bands – A softer fabric with a 2 1/2 times wider band that eases tension between the ears and the nape. All other wig cap designs are made with a thinner, not as soft fabric, and will in some cause uncomfortable depression lines in the area between the ears and the nape. Soft Flex Combs - Tiny, flexible, weightless combs for added security. The Soft Stretch wig cap design incorporates three flexible combs sewn to the inside of the wig cap, one at the front and one at each side of the wig cap. These combs slide easily through your hair for added security. Soft Weave Wefting – Generally in most wig designs wefts are sewn in straight rows from left to right, this type of wefting limits the flow of thestyling of the fiber. In Soft Stretch the wefts are sewn in a wavy pattern. This technique offers a cooler cap design and allows more air flow to your scalp for better fiber movement and more styling versatility. Life Life Fiber - A TWC exclusive from Kanekalon featuring ultra-light denier fiber strands combined with traditional fiber, resulting in more coverage and volume, and a wi that is 25% lighter in weight. New to Wigs? If you're unclear about how to narrow down styles and pick ones that will work best for you, our Wig Buyer's Guide is here to help! Like selecting a diamond, choosing a wig requires some understanding and appreciation for details. This guide will walk you through the ins and outs of the 4 Cs of Wigs: Cut, Cap Size, Composition and Color.
1. Start with Style Step 1: Hair Cut Our site lets you easily narrow your search by length, texture and hairstyle. At the beginning, you may want to stick close to a style you're familiar with. A more drastic change can always be made later as you get used to wearing a wig. That's when the fun begins. Just think: endless style flexibility! Many of our clients ultimately have a lot of fun experimenting with a variety of looks. Certain face shapes are flattered by certain styles. Consult our guide for some tips! 2. Find Your Capsize Step 2: Cap SizeWhile average size wigs tend to fit about 95% of customers, you will find that quite a few wigs also come in petite and large sizes. Consider that many also have adjustable straps that give up to 1/2" so that you can achieve a comfortable and secure fit. To determine the right size wig for you, measure the circumference of your head from the front hairline, behind your ear, to the nape of your neck, to your other ear and then back to the front hairline. Jot down your measurement, then consult the table below. Please note that sizes may vary slightly by brand and that not all wigs are available in all cap sizes. Cap Size Chart
